Emika Chen is a bounty hunter in the near future NYC, she catches criminals that aren’t bad enough for the police to bother with. Her world is obsessed with Warcross, a VR video game created by suave, billionaire Hideo Tanaka. She accidentally hacks herself into the opening game of the Warcross Championships and ends up with a call from Hideo himself (who she has had a crush on since he invented the game when he was 11). He needs a spy in this years tournament, and it’s a job Emika can’t resist.
I knew I was going to like this book from a footnote in the epigraph. It’s a correction for an earlier edition of the article quoted that mistakenly says Hideo is a millionaire. He is a billionaire.
Marie Lu as done it again, people. I don’t know where to start: the characters! The plot! The setting!
WARCROSS is so immersive I entirely forgot that I have other responsibilities and read it in nearly one sitting (I forced myself to take a break so I could savor it). The whole ‘real’ world feels so real, and what I imagine Tokyo to be like, and the Warcross worlds are all so unique and great and so much fun to watch them compete in.
Emika and Hideo are both such well thought out and multi-faceted characters with great background stories. All the minor characters were great as well, like all of Emika’s teammates, and I hope we get a closer look at them in Book 2.
I’m not going to say anything about the end, because spoilers, but I couldn’t not mention it at all because DAMN talk about an ending.
Thoughts on WARCROSS? Did you love it as much as I did!?
